Karema Munassar

May - September 2023

Karema’s work is mostly sculptural, and she enjoy working with readymades. Karema make conceptual works out of found objects by combining familiar household items with other materials and machine parts. She’s particularly interested in the significance of objects, their relationships with language, their names, and their meaning. When objects are represented in unusual positions, Karema is fascinated by their physical appearance and their relationship with the audience. The various perspectives are necessary in interpreting the work in order to comprehend the concept of her art. The process can be simple, as in the tilted hanging chair ‘Chandelier 2021’, or complex, as in the Kinetic sculpture 2022. Karema’s work carries such heavy emotions that she feel it control’s her rather than her controlling it; however, it remains light due to its sense of humour. Karema’s sculptures are interactive, performative, and alive. Aside from sculpture, she also writes, photograph’s, and make films. Her writing is conceptual and asemic, while her films are political and provocative.
