LightNight Play: Exquisite Corpse

Exploring this year’s theme of Play, our studio members have formed groups and collectively created new works in the same method as the game Exquisite Corpse, in which one player draws a head, one a torso, and one legs, creating a collectively formed body. Players don’t reveal their section of the shared creation until the end, making the collaboration entirely anonymous.

Each group has taken a different approach, a more literal version of the concept closely following the game’s rules, passing the piece around whilst focusing on the process of making and adding their own additions.

The other two groups have taken a more experimental approach, choosing to allow for more random outcomes - one keeping with the body as a focal point using a mixture of mediums to capture a chaotic expression of their theme, the second choosing to reflect on the present moment of redefining fun within a home setting. The house as body is their starting point, each member choosing a room and adding disco-inspired elements to their piece.

In addition to the collectively created works, some studio members have produced complimentary pieces that help to unify all of the collaborative outcomes. Ellie Towers & Reece Griffiths have collaborated to create a video piece to accompany their installation as part of one of the experimental groups surrounding the living room. Along with Margaret O’Brien and Harry Brereton.

Georgemma Hunt has made an interactive sculpture from found and repurposed materials. Using a bold painted line, Georgemma has depicted her familiar sun and moon characters against colourful, patterned backgrounds. Each of the four casks spins in isolation and the viewer is encouraged to play and rotate each of them to achieve varying combinations of the individual parts.

Capture VR have created a virtual tour of this show which you can watch below.
