Jon Edgley

After not having access to a studio for two years, Jon applied to use our gallery walls as a sketchbook to practice drawing at scale — something Jon has been keen to try for a while. Most of his work remains no larger than A3-A5, so our gallery walls provide the perfect environment to experiment with scale and composition.

On his first attempt at the space invader residency, Jon tried drawing directly onto the gallery walls. To create large-scale versions of his drawings and document his process. Sadly, his two weeks were cut short after catching covid. Since then, he has lost interest in drawing large scale. Jon began to focus on alternative methods of production and the distribution of art. Instead, using the two weeks to produce a new small publication. The two weeks were his deadline to complete the work and use the gallery space as an office to create. Having that divide in space the gallery for work and his room no longer a space of work but rest has been hugely beneficial to Jon's focus and ability to rest well. Although, it can be fun when art and lifelines blur. It can have an impact on you physically and mentally when you and your body are not sure when to rest and switch off.

Jon did use the space to attempt to create a floor drawing experimenting with Posca pens. For anyone wanting to try this, get some degreaser. The stuff used for the metal surfaces in your kitchen because when Posca pen dry on floors, hot water alone doesn’t work. Jon found through mopping that doing mundane jobs can sometimes help the brain to wonder nicely.

The publication is complete. It’s 20 pages of illustrations and memes titled ‘LIVING THE DREAM’ and will be out soon.
