Focal Studios
Focal studies are a multidisciplinary creative studio. Throughout their residency they experimented with developing projection mapping techniques for Theatre, Retail and Experimental uses.
They approached local coffee shop Ryde, choosing to animate this retailer’s signage. As technology allows for innovative live advertising, they were able to experiment with the different approaches this could have for both the retailer and consumer.
Having previously collaborated with theatre and production companies, Focal Studios started thinking of ways they could use technology to make the theatre experience more immersive. During their residency, they trailed projection mapping by applying it to the different aspects of theatre. This allowed them to play with a digital set without having to swap physical sets between scenes.
Working with artwork given by artist Laura Sullivan, Focal investigated how light can be used to augment 3D sculpture and wall installations. One of the tests consisted of mapping Laura’s work with animated video structures. Continuing with their experimental art installations Focal revisited ‘Wake the Dragon’ which was produced with Bring The Fire Project, allowing them to reanimate this outdoor installation in new setting.
